MVMAC adds 2 fabulous new coaches
Henry Gronier, internationally noted violinist and member of the recently formed, but already highly acclaimed, Rossetti Quartet is celebrated by all who have been coached by him. We know you will be excited, as have we, by his deep knowledge of chamber music, his ability to "fix what needs fixing" and his genuine enthusiasm when you succeed.
Gerard Reuter, oboist extraordinaire, is a member of the Dorian Quintet and a founding member of Orpheus and An die Musik. It is safe to say there is no wind player who knows more about wind and wind and string chamber music than Gerry. He will share this knowledge with you as he coaches you in wind quintets, wind and string ensembles and other wind literature.
The prize winning Da Vinci will, as they have for over ten years, coach all aspects of the chamber music literature. All who have attended MVMAC know what wonderfully giving, enthusiastic coaches they are and how skillful in helping you improve your chamber music playing.
Richard Slavich, cellist and Chairman of the String Department at the University of Denver and Thomas Diener violist of the Rosetti Quartet, both outstanding coaches and instrumentalists will be with us again as will Yvonne Hicks cellist and unmatched coached for less accomplished chamber musicians.
MVMAC is the summer music program with the finest staff of any in the country. You will benefit from their great coaching ability and enjoy their extraordinary artistry in concerts held twice weekly.

The String Program
Daily Assignments
- String players will be assigned, daily, to ensembles (quartets, quintets, etc.) with others of like ability. Where necessary, staff will round out groups to assure the highest level of playing of which each particular group is capable.
- The composition of the groups will be changed each day to enable participants to become acquainted with as many other musicians as possible.
- Staff will be available to coach these groups or participants many choose to simply read on their own.
Intensive Three Day Coaching
- Advanced or intermediate level string players , interested in in-depth coaching, may sign up for three days, each week, with the same coach and the same quartet members.
- Musicians may enroll with their own pre-formed group to study a work of their choice, or be assigned to as compatible a group as possible and be notified, in advance, of the work to be studied.
- Part of the day will be devoted to preparation and the rest to coaching. Coached groups are encouraged to perform one movement of the work studied. Participation in the performance is up to the members of each group.
The deadline for enrolling in this program is June 1st.
Preparatory Program for the inexperienced string player
- MVMAC has a program specifically designed for string players who are not, as yet, ready to play a quartet on their own without staff support.
- String players in this category will meet daily with Yvonne Hicks who will coach them in multiple quartets, each morning.
- If 2 violinist, a violist and a cellist from this group have learned the quartet worked on well enough to carry it alone, they will be assigned a room, for the afternoon, to play it. Those not so assigned will continue to work with Yvonne in the afternoon.
Final decision regarding placement in this workshop is at the discretion of the Director.
Special String Workshops for Advanced Players
20th Century string quartet workshop (July 13th to 20th only)
- This program is for advanced players, only . Those enrolled will receive 2 hours of intensive coaching, each morning, on works of Bartok, Shostakovich and other 20th century composers. The afternoon session will be spent preparing for the next day's coaching.
- Applicants must have the technical skills to qualify for this demanding workshop. MVMAC welcomes applicants. They will be contacted to discuss their eligibility.
- Applicants are encouraged to register as a pre-formed quartet. Individual registrants will be assigned to quartets if there is a sufficient number of qualified applicants to make matched groups feasible.
- Registrants will be assigned to literature on which they will be coached. If the pre-formed group wishes to select its own literature, we ask the quartet to inform us of its selection beforehand so we may get the score and copies of the music. All players are expected to be well prepared on arrival at MVMAC.
Deadline for enrolling in this program is June 1st.
Late Beethoven Workshop (July 20th to 27th only)
- This program is for advanced players, only. Those enrolled will receive 2 hours of intensive coaching each morning, on one of the late Beethoven quartets (opus 127 through 135.) The afternoon session will be spent preparing for the next day's coaching.
- Applicants must have the technical skill to qualify for this demanding workshop. MVMAC welcomes applicants. They will be contacted to discuss their eligibility.
- Applicants are encouraged to register as pre-formed quartet. Individual registrants will be assigned to quartets if there is a sufficient number of applicants to make matched groups feasible.
- Registrants will be assigned to the quartet on which they will be coached. If a pre-formed quartet wishes to select a particular Beethoven quartet, we ask that they inform us of the group's choice beforehand. All players are expected to be well prepared on arrival at MVMAC.
Deadline for enrolling in this program is June 1st.
The Piano Program
- Each week a limited number of advanced pianists will be enrolled, each week, who are capable of playing piano quintets, quartets or trios fluently. They will be admitted at the discretion of the Directors, after auditioning or submitting tapes. Pianists will be assigned with strings and winds, twice a day.
- A piano will be available to each at all times, for practicing or unassigned groups. Pianists will have the opportunity to be coached by members of the MVMAC faculty. Coaching is optional.
- Pianists with pre-formed groups may request the 3 Day Intensive Coaching Program. They may be coached on a work of their own choice. If they do not have a pre-formed group we will try to form one with the consent of string or wind players, however, we cannot guarantee coaching under these
circumstances.
The deadline for this option for in-depth three day coaching is June 1st.
The Wind Program
- Last year, MVMAC had an unusually fine Wind Program. Our wind participants studied the Schubert Octet and Beethoven Septet, wind quintets and a variety of music for winds and strings. This year with, Gerry Reuter coaching and Rose Mary Waltzer, horn staff, assisting him wind players will have a rare opportunity to learn the wind and wind and string literature from a true master of the art.
- Wind players will be scheduled twice a day with string or other winds, if they are capable of playing the parts fluently. Assignments will depend entirely upon the playing level of the participants and the variety of wind players who enroll each week.
- Three day intensive coaching is available for pre-formed groups only. The Deadline for this option is June 1st.
